California's electrical contracting market is being reshaped by the EV charging installation boom, solar panel interconnection work, and the ADU (accessory dwelling unit) construction wave. Electrical contractors who've positioned in these growth segments are commanding premium valuations in 2025.

California Electrical Contractor Multiples

California electrical businesses sell for 2.5x–4.5x SDE. The wide range reflects massive variance in the market: a residential service/repair business in the Central Valley trades very differently than a commercial electrical contractor in the Bay Area with EV infrastructure and solar integration revenue. Commercial contractors with recurring service agreements and specialized trade certifications (C-10 license holders with solar experience) command the highest multiples.

EV Charging and Solar: The California Premium

Electrical contractors who've built EV charging station installation programs (commercial Level 2 and DC fast charger), solar interconnection, and battery storage installation revenue are commanding 0.5x–1.0x multiple premiums. These revenue streams are contractually rich (commercial clients, often multi-site), growing rapidly, and difficult to replicate without certified technicians. Buyers pay for this positioning — PE firms especially view California EV electrical contractors as strategic platforms.

ADU and Residential Remodel Demand

California's ADU law changes have created a significant backlog of residential electrical work — panel upgrades, sub-panel installations, and whole-home rewires for ADU additions. Electrical contractors in Los Angeles, San Diego, and Bay Area markets with strong ADU installation programs have seen 20%+ revenue growth. This project-based revenue is valuable but doesn't command recurring revenue premiums — it adds to size and growth story rather than multiple.

California's C-10 License and Barrier to Entry

California requires a C-10 Electrical Contractor license for any electrical work over $500. The licensing process (experience, exam, bond, insurance) creates a meaningful barrier to entry that protects existing businesses. A transferable C-10 license with an RMO (Responsible Managing Officer) relationship has real value in a sale — buyers will pay for the ability to operate legally from day one without waiting for their own license.

California Tax Reality

California's 13.3% capital gains tax (on top of federal) is the harshest in the nation for business sellers. On a $2M sale, California adds $266K in state taxes vs. zero in neighboring Nevada or $50K in Arizona. Planning options: installment sales to spread income across years, opportunity zone investment, or — for some sellers — legal residency change before closing. A California tax attorney should be involved 12+ months before selling.
