Electrical contractor businesses vary significantly in their buyer appeal. Service and repair operations — residential and commercial — are the most attractive to buyers. New construction-dependent electrical contractors are harder to value and command lower multiples due to project revenue concentration and dependency on the construction cycle.
Service and repair electrical businesses: 3.0x–4.5x SDE. These businesses have recurring customer relationships, strong brand recall, and predictable revenue from repeat service calls and maintenance. New construction electrical contractors: 2.0x–3.0x SDE. Revenue depends on construction activity, which is cyclical. Customers are builders, not homeowners, creating concentration risk. Hybrid (service + some construction): 2.5x–3.5x SDE.
The highest-valued electrical businesses have: a strong base of residential service customers who call for troubleshooting, panel upgrades, and home safety inspections; annual maintenance agreements with commercial clients; licensed electricians who don't depend on the owner for technical knowledge; and a field service software system (Jobber, ServiceTitan) with clean job history.
Electrical businesses require master electrician licenses, which creates a transfer challenge. In many states, the license is tied to the individual, not the business. Buyers need to either have their own license or hire a licensed master electrician to hold the license. This creates a potential multiple discount if your license is tied to you personally and you're exiting. Address this before going to market.
